Calling First Grade Treasures Users

So, I'm not too fond of the basal, BUT I have to admit I like it much better than I did when we first got it (6 years ago).  I thought the skills and concepts were difficult.  I still think that, but either my kiddos are getting better, or I may have a small idea of what I'm finally doing.  I really liked the series for my 2nd graders though.  It just seemed to go much smoother.  I was able to do the FABULOUS trifolds, take the story quizzes, let them hop on AR if they wanted, and it was perfect........I had a system................then, silly me, switched grade levels (which I'm glad), but there it went. Here I am this year learning everything all over again.

The Basal came with Big Book Stories, which I really enjoyed, but starting with Unit 4--big books no more....so I got to thinking...time to prep them some more.  I made a couple of things, not sure how it's going to work until I try them next week, but I thought I'd post them for y'all to see if you'd be interested.  I made a story question sheet to go with the basal story (Pelican was Hungry).  I like to read the story in class and discuss with my students, and then I have them take their book home and reread it to parents for homework.  (I'm not a stickler for homework--but that's another post someday).  I did type up a 5 question page.  It's not fancy.  It's not fabulous like those 2nd grade Trifolds, but it will help them remember their information.  I also added a few questions to the premade Treasures Story Selection Assessment.  I typed up a few sentences as DOL's too.  You can click on the image to grab each different page.

Remember, this is all new to me all over again.  I'm hoping that it works, and that someone else can  use it.  Let me know if ya do!

  1. We don't use a basal. I think lots of other bloggers use this same one, so you should search for their great ideas too. Sometimes I wish I did so that I had a bit more direction, but I'm grateful I have some independence too. This looks good to me!

  3. I would love to use these activities, but have no access to Treasures. Is it a common story I could find at the library or online? or could you scan it in and send it to me. You can tell me you don't have time and we'll just not do this activity...honest I will still LOVE you and your blog. :)

  5. Treasures is our reading series published by Macmillan/McGraw. I google the story, but couldn't find it for purchase. It's by Jim Arnosky. Some of the stories in the series are common stories. I wouldn't feel comfortable scanning it in due to copyright. I'm sorry.
